In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
