Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.

Air Travel Interruptions

The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."

So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.

Regional Consequences

At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.

Smuggling Techniques

When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."

Regional Security Context

These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.

Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
