Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
