Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Police then discovered multiple other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; investigators are presently not aware of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
A senior official commented the incident made him without words and needed to be solved promptly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing attack in 2020," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
