At least thirteen people perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
